Heyyyyy, I have in my CD player the Doctor Bottom CD of Ritchie's band's first ever live session, and now I've played it through about 4 times, I'm gonna tell you my opinion of it like I promised Ritchie I would....... After the intro.....they open with Only You Can Rock Me. Some of the guitarwork on this......well......it could almost BE Schenker, I ain't kidding. Tosh's vocals came over as a bit dodgy at first but for me that adds to the rawness and the gutsiness of it. The way I see it, each live performance is a page in the life-story of a band. And as a debut performance this whole thing was pretty amazingly damn good. The vocals evened out as the set went on and Tosh got more comfortable, so that wasn't a criticism I was making, just an honest point of view. Out in the Streets and Martian Landscape, (which is one that we don't hear nearly enough on UFO compilations and setlists) followed, all completely faithful to the UFO feel. Then Midnight Train.....this is the first cover of this that I've heard - again, stunning guitar from Ritchie and Chabin, and Tei's drummin and Mani's keyboards were spot on, and vocals more on target now Tosh had settled into his stride. Now .....Try Me - when I first got this CD, I only had time to skim through each track with the idea of playing it in full later when I had time to give it 100% attention. When I forwarded to Try Me I just had to listen right through, I loved it. To me, this one, on first hearing, was what the word 'tribute' is all about. I know this sounds a bit cheeeeesy, but I'm telling you how I heard it.....it was like they were saying 'UFO, we love you, and are dedicating every note of this song to you. 'There was the 'Schenker Stillness' about this one. It was as if the music meant everything to them - I got the feeling that the audience was standing there listening to every single note. Lookin Out for Number 1. Great team effort ! The playing was stunning yet again. Hey, one thing I noticed......Tosh talks just like Elvis !!! Lipstick Traces. Beautiful ! I love the way Dr. Bottom do the songs that we wish UFO would play live!!! Then Love to Love....and from the first note this one held my attention right the way through...I have listened to about 37673879 versions of this song, and this version can hold its head up proudly with any of them. Finally C'mon everybody. Great one to finish on. I love live music. That might sound a crazy point to make, but I really do love the liveness of live music. So, overall, astounding guitar and musicianship, I was very VERY impressed, sometimes the guitarwork was so much like the real thing that it was scary. Remember that fella who went to bed one night and woke up as Jimi Hendrix, well.....there were many times in this CD when I thought Ritchie had morphed into Michael Schenker - isn't that a scary thought... The CD is all UFO/MS tunes, so it's brilliant songs, played amazingly well, with so much love and dedication and respect. Ritchie is on guitar, and at times it's almost like a UFO bootleg. A very creditable debut live session, and thanks for recording it for posterity, darlin. And heyyyy, my name is on the sleevenotes, so I gotta give it ten out of ten for that alone !!!! * Sad Old Bat is a Supreme Power Ruler of this planet.
